Shadow Priest · Essentials

A solid starting setup for Shadow Priest — picks that improve your output regardless of content. Reviewed 20 May 2026.

Spec Builds

Default DPS Build

Voidweaver

Single-target sustained damage. Entropic Rift fills the gap between Voidform windows with consistent output and reduces punishment for imperfect Insanity management. Weaker than Archon on multi-target pull burst — use Archon for M+ packs.

Details! Damage Meter

Works in Midnight Updated 16 May 2026

Shadow Priest performance hinges on Voidform uptime and Devouring Plague efficiency. Details! shows spell-by-spell breakdown: if Void Bolt is below 35% of your casts while in Voidform, your Insanity generation is off. If Vampiric Touch contributes less than 18% of total damage, your DoT uptime is leaking. The cast efficiency view also shows how many Devouring Plague overcaps happened per fight — the clearest signal that your Insanity management needs work.

Platynator

9.5M downloads

Works in Midnight Updated 19 May 2026

Shadow Priest's rotation demands near-perfect DoT uptime on multiple targets. Platynator puts Vampiric Touch and Shadow Word: Pain timers directly on enemy nameplates — you scan the room and refresh whatever's falling off without losing your Insanity generation mid-Voidform. In M+, the cast bar overlay also shows when to Silence a dangerous ability without accidentally breaking your own Devouring Plague setup.

OmniCD

33.4M downloads

Works in Midnight Updated 27 Feb 2026

Shadow Priest's Power Infusion is one of the most impactful externals in the game. In progression your raid team decides who receives it per boss phase, and OmniCD shows when PI is on cooldown on other Priests in your group, when your assigned target's own cooldowns are up, and whether you should hold it for a specific burst window. In M+, it also tracks group kicks so you can see whether Silence is genuinely needed or the cast is already covered — important for cloth survivability when you're deciding between offensive and defensive globals.

BetterCooldownManager

Works in Midnight Updated 22 Apr 2026

Dark Ascension and Voidform are Shadow's two major burst windows, and they rarely align naturally without deliberate setup. BetterCooldownManager groups them at the top of your CD list so you can see at a glance whether Dark Ascension and Power Infusion are both available for the same window. Add Mindgames and Dispersion to the lower group — Dispersion especially needs an audio cue since it's genuinely forgotten while managing Insanity and refreshing DoTs simultaneously.

Twintop's Resource Bar

1.1M downloads

Works in Midnight Updated 20 May 2026

Shadow Priest's rotation revolves around building Insanity to enter Voidform at the right moment. The default Blizzard bar shows a number; Twintop's shows your Insanity as a segmented bar with threshold markers at your key breakpoints — the point where Voidform becomes optimal to enter. It also shows major cooldown timers with audio cues so you can react to Dark Ascension or Mindbender without looking away from your target. Over a million downloads and updated through Midnight.

MaxDps Priest

4.1M downloads

Works in Midnight Updated 17 May 2026

Shadow Priest's priority list is non-obvious — Insanity generation has to be balanced against Voidform entry timing, and the correct spell depends on whether you're building Insanity, inside Voidform, or in the gap between. MaxDps highlights the next spell you should cast based on your current state. Like all rotation helpers, it's a learning aid rather than a permanent tool — once you understand when to Voidform and how to manage Insanity thresholds, you won't need it. Most useful when first learning the spec or returning after a break.
